Seafarers UK Week A Success

03rd July 2012

Seafarers Awareness Week (25 June-1 July) is an annual campaign coordinated by Seafarers UK. Once again this campaign was a great success in highlighting the importance of seafarers to the UK.

Seafarers UK gives grants of £2.5 million annually to more than 70 charities that help seafarers, including the Apostleship of the Sea. With the support of many other organisations Seafarers UK promotes Seafarers Awareness Week to highlight:

  •     95% of total UK trade is carried by ship
  •     Half of our food is imported and most comes by sea
  •     We rely on seafarers to keep our ‘island nation’ afloat!

The first day of Seafarers Awareness Week – 25 June – was also the 'Day of the Seafarer' when people worldwide were invited by the International
Maritime Organization to thank seafarers and say "It came by sea and I can’t live without it!"
